!ABOUT!
sUPERIORbelly
sUPERIORbelly is a collaborative of professionals working collectively and individually to produce art, design and music. The collective was established in 1999 by Zak Ostrowski and Thomas Pyrzewski. The sUPERIORbelly alias was originally derived from the omohyoid, which is a muscle situated in the front of the neck. The unusual paring of words reflected the initial artist / designer duality, and over time became synonymous with the artists intellectual approach and output, much like the use of DADA. Ten years later this reference to biology is fitting, as the organizations identity continues to evolve and encompass new areas of interest. Aside from a record label and clothing line, the belly and its members specialize in everything from sculpture and performance art to brand identity and environmental signage.
During the late 90’s sUPERIORbelly was involved with the emerging underground hip-hop movement. The group went on to collaborate with a variety of hip-hop acts all over the world and in 2005 a compilation of selected works was distributed by the ArtCorp / Upop label based in Japan. The sUPERIORbelly label is currently working on releasing select Detroit based acts such as Dial81, The Interior Project, and Beverly Fre$h. sUPERIORbelly has organized and participated in a variety of exhibitions for over 10 years. Selected exhibitions include a multimedia group performance at the Detroit Music hall, Zak Ostrowski’s installation at the California Polytechnic University and the sUPERIORbelly fashion line debut at the Pool trade show in Las Vegas, Thomas Pyrzewski’s sculpture at the Marshall Fredericks Sculpture Museum Biennial in 2008, and a performance piece by Blair French at the Marygrove College. The members of this collective have also produced multimedia design work in conjunction with a variety of corporations and clients such as: The Palace of Auburn Hills, Real Salt Lake, DTE Music Theater, Henry Ford Hospital, Pluto post, Pure Detroit, Detroit Ignition, E-Title, Red Bull New York, Rossetti, Florida International University Panthers, Chevy, Ford, Mazda, Saab, Infiniti, Jack Daniels, Harley Davidson, Michelin, Organic, and SpeedShape.
